The Goodwin what a special feature. On July 26 Richard and Goodman former special counsel to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson spoke at slobber go to Torreon at Brandeis on the problem of racial violence. Listeners were struck by the resemblance of Goodwin style and delivery to those characteristic of the Kennedys. And there was another resemblance Goodwin's opening remarks were laden with the type of humor that has come to be remembered as the Kennedy wit. We hear now from Richard Goodwin that's lost to Tory. Ladies and gentleman Mr. HOOVER. I'm glad to be back here in Massachusetts. I thought a year or two ago that I would probably end up as a citizen of New York. I was at my home in Connecticut and the phone rang and very quickly a voice said to me said Dick I'd like you to run for governor of New York. I said I don't I don't think that I can do it Bob. And he said. He says it's perfect you've got experience in domestic and foreign affairs. You have served both presidents you've been involved both of the legislative and executive
branches of government. And I said well I'm afraid it just won't work. He said why not I said I have three insuperable handicaps. So what I have a lag of eight and I said well I've never run for office before. I'm only in my 30s and I'm a citizen of Massachusetts. You're right he said it will never work. I came back to him as you saw when I saw a friend Teddy Kennedy really likes me an awful lot I'm the only man in politics you can call a kid. I'm going to work on my memoir cause everybody who was involved in the Kennedy administration has to write their memoirs. I think it was Winston Churchill that once said during World War Two. History will deal gently with us. Because I intend to write at. The end. That is the probably the story of the Kennedy administration is being dealt with gently by history
people involved writing about mine it's going to be called the Thousand Days of office legend. Already. I've already is going to talk about how Office say the Panama Canal and other important incidents of the administration have sold the magazine rights already to Playboy. The air. Is going to be the only memoir that pulls all from the centerfold. I want to have a course in it so some of the real quotes during the administration. I think people are concealing a lot of the truth. Like Pierre Salinger saying you want to hear something funny. They put a dancer up against me. And. Bob McNamara about don't worry we can never fight a land war in Asia. And Bill Moyers when he said to me I think somebody has to stand up to the president. President Johnson so why just the other day the
president said to me Bill stand up and I stood up. Actually of course life in the White House under President Johnson was not. So his critics a picture was it was really very pleasant. Remember one time I went down to the president and I said I think we have to do something with the president I think there's a conspiracy of silence around here. He looked at me said That's right Dick he said join it. I am. So here I am. With thank. You. Richard and good one former special counsel to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson speaking on July 26 that's last purgatory.
