Episode Description
This 2-hour color program will bring to the American audience one of Europe's most popular and widely-viewed musical events, the annual Eurovision Song Contest -- an international competition to select the best of the year's pop music offerings. The contest, featuring vocalists and singing groups from 18 European countries who have own previous national competitions, will take place April 3 in Dublin, Ireland, under the auspices of the European Broadcasting Union. Participating nations this year are: Austria, Malta, Monaco, Switzerland, West Germany, Spain, France, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Yugoslavia, Finland and Norway. Last year's competition, won by the Irish song "All Kinds of Everything," was seen by over 400 million people when it was televised live in 24 countries in Europe, North America, the Middle East, South America and Africa. Irish actress Bernadette Ni Ghallchoir will present the contest, using her native language as well as English and French, the two official languages of the European Broadcasting Union. She is well-known in Ireland for her work in radio drama and recently starred opposite Peter O 'Toole in the film "Country Dance," which will be released shortly.
