Valvoline 100 years under the hood. They like us. I love seeing all the places people have to go. I love in part of the company that helps those people go. And good will be to thank you so you can get there. You accuse your host for Motor Week. John Davis. Well hello and welcome again to motor week. We're glad to have you with us. We're remembered well it was January 2004 when we got the chance to take the Cadillac CTX V to a proper racetrack and see if all the hype surrounding this super sedan was for real. Well it was never before had we driven a domestic sedan that was as fast and refined both on the track and on the streets to dinner that CTX V was amazing. So what do we think of the all new 2009 Cadillac CTX V. Well let's find out.
The fact that it's round two for me means velocity as the arrival of the all new 2009 Cadillac CTX be at our four door performance luxury fans smiling from ear to ear like the first C TSB the adrenaline pumping 0 9 job takes careful aim at Hero factory tuners like the BMW M5 and Mercedes Benz. A 63 AMG. But it's more charged up than AB or super charge that is. GM bless this rear drive Goober sedan with a derivative of the six point two liter V8 found in the Chevrolet Corvette 0 1 with Ethan's latest for Loeb super charger. The resulting output stands at a whopping five hundred fifty six horsepower. That's 40 percent more than the first C TSB and five hundred fifty one pound feet of torque. It also easily outclasses both its m and
AMG rivals. All of this energy is managed by either a new twin clutch premix six speed manual gearbox. First time available six speed automatic with steering wheel mounted paddles and driver selectable shift programs through our traffic our velocity crew managed a super quick four point two seconds with an automatic S. TS V. That's more than a second quicker than the first C TSB manual 0 9 CTF V then catapulted through the quarter mile and twelve point seven seconds at 115 miles per hour. Gears are spaced perfectly with Earth as the real workhorse supporting the CTF V is GM as new gen magnetic ride control rapid response suspension with track ready sport and street cruising tour settings the stability track electronic stability control system can be switched on off or to a low intrusive competition mode. It's total high performance hack human allow the CTF fi to record the fastest lap at the nürburgring for any
production sedan ever. It showed us this same level of prowess during handling exercises in our home test site the CTF feel is heavy but equally capable as with the first generation this is a car you drive not toss around. The tires are super grippy the only thing you have to worry about is too much throttle Brembo brakes still rule the CTF silver front calipers stop single piece vented rotors while red calipers indicate the optional track package and faster cooling to PS rotors topped with a standard fitment were strong 117 feet from 60 to zero. That too is better than the original C TSB covering those calipers or 19 inch wheels wearing performance summer tires 250 540 are 9000 and 285 35 are 9000 in the rear. On the outside AC TSB also communicates both more aggression and
sophistication. Starting with a larger dihedral grill for better cooling and a bulging aluminum Hood is a constant reminder of the super charger below flared fenders further intensify the car's might makes right attitude. The C TSB then finishes off with a new muscular rear facia with appropriate via badging and bright exhaust tips within the C TSB retains luxury elements of the standard c ts like the hand-stitched dash. But this cabin also boasts a sporting edge set apart with glossy black trim their runs down the center stack and over the center console tunneled readouts are punctuated with a boost gauge and a g force meter. The available Rick Horrow buckets are a must with 14 way power their adjustable bolstering keeps you from sliding around at high G's. Not the ideal candidate for Green Car of the year the CTA SB has government fuel economy ratings of 13 city 9000 highway on premium gas. We manage seventeen point seven mpg in real world driving base
pricing for the C TSB is fifty nine thousand nine hundred ninety five dollars including a gas guzzler tax that still puts it at least $20000 under the M5 and the E 63 AMG. A key element of the success of the m an AMG factory tuners is that each iteration is a significant improvement on its predecessor. Cadillac is following that ritual to the letter with the 2009 C TSB. It is not a second chapter and seeking ultimate American sedan performance. It is a second coming. If you're not fully up on the basics of tire care Pat Goss has advice on how to keep you on track. John critical to a safe and economical car are our tires and here to give us some basic tips says Bob. He's a tire engineer welcome to Goss's garage. It's
wonderful to be here thanks for having me. OK. One of the common questions that we get concerns tire pressure. What is the proper tire pressure for my car. Well most importantly everyone should remember that tires are for the most important and least understood components on your car regardless of what you drive. And fundamental to that tires performance is the inflation pressure. You should check that inflation pressure at least one once a month and think about this inflation pressure is important because it helps determine how well your tires stop start in a corner but also how much fuel efficiency they deliver. The U.S. Department of Energy says that. Over 3.5 million gallons of fuel is wasted each day due to under and plated tires. That's over a billion dollars a day in today's gas prices. That's a lot of money. A lot of money. OK but where do we find the proper pressure. Well to find the most appropriate inflation pressure for your vehicle you should go to the glove box. Look at the owner's manual or often on the inside of the glove box there's a there's actually a placard
on some vehicles the door jam has that placard or the gas cap lid. But the important thing to remember is don't go to the side of all of your tires on the side of the tires that inflation pressure is Max inflation pressure for max load. You should always go to the vehicle manufactured inflation pressure. OK and it means we need a tire gauge. And of course we have the traditional pencil gauge. This is what is familiar with which is OK but the 89 cent version. These are fine as long as you get a quality. Properly calibrated when you should keep that in your glove box in fact and check your inflation pressure at least once a month. All right now here we have a dial gauge which are known to be more accurate but they cost more money and much better a little more inconvenient. Typically you don't want to carry this thing around in your glove box you'll have in the trunk which makes it a little harder to get to. Another important way to check your inflation pressure is to stop by your local tire retailer. Typically it doesn't even matter what brand of tires you have. They'll be happy to check the inflation pressure of your tires and then Arum up at no
charge. OK now where. That's another big issue. When do I have to replace my tires tread wear or inspect those tires at least two every two months for sure. Inspect them for unusual wear and one way to check the wear on your tires is to simply use a Lincoln head penny turn Mr. Lincoln upside down bend down put the Lincoln's head upside down into the groove if you can see all of Mr. Lincoln's head. Then your tires are legally worn out. That's two 30 seconds of an inch if part of Lincoln's head is covered. Then your tires still have somewhere now. To add a little bit of a safety margin you could use the George Washington quarter rule that will provide you a measure of for 30 seconds of an inch that tells you when you have two 30 seconds to go before the tires are legally worn out gives you a little measure of safety. Yeah and that's that's an important factor. Yes. Thank you so much it's certainly welcome. And if you have a question or comment write to me the address is Motor Week Owings Mills Maryland 2 1 1 1 7. Getting a
driver's license is an important rite of passage for teenagers with that new privilege comes new dangers. Governments and parents work hard to reduce those risk. But each year some 7000 teens die on American roads and hundreds of thousands more are injured. Now our solution has always been serious driver training. And this week Dave Duerson shows us a surprising source that's taking driver's ed to its most serious level yet. This is the North Carolina headquarters for Blackwater Worldwide America's premier security training company. The driving instructors at Blackwater teach military law enforcement and national security officers everything from high speed pursuit. Escaping an insurgent ambush. But today students don't wear a badge or carry a gun. The instructors of Blackwater However they're the most important students they've ever had. That's because these students are all new to the road. Teenagers learning the ins and outs of daily driving and facing dangers that the veteran
police and military instructors at Blackwater know all too well. Blackwater is running this program because of but a year and a half ago we had a local high school here in North Carolina that had to expand were six students were killed and alcohol related crashes in excess is big. It was kind of a traumatic thing to that community so Blackwater stepped up and offered to provide some type of driver's training to the young adults in that area. And then it kind of blossomed from there. And now every few months Blackwater welcomes young drivers and their families to its Moyock North Carolina headquarters for the advanced highway safety course a day at the HSC starts in the classroom where students learn the basics of road safety and vehicle dynamics. OK straight line break in is the maximum the best way to get that car stop straight line. If I start to turn and that's when that car I'm going to have to adjust to that weight transfer then it's out of the classroom and onto the track for a series of intensive behind the wheel exercises in observation and car control
braking with and without anti-lock skid control and emergency situations like falling asleep at the wheel. After a well-earned lunch break the students are back in the classroom for the North Carolina alcohol law enforcement division's keys to life program keys to life teaches students about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. And to illustrate the consequences of such behavior and remind them that a teen driver is killed every 15 minutes on American roads. The class includes regular visits from the Grim Reaper and eulogies for the friends suddenly plucked from their midst. The day climaxes with a dramatic accident recreate complete with smashed vehicles severely injured victims and a real time rescue by Moyock North Carolina's Emergency Medical Services Unit. It's a so going into a busy day and a lesson that really hits home for many of the students.
Just ahead one of my friends lost on this. That's it's not worth this is stupid to do it. Just a day at the advanced Highway Safety Course is not only valuable it's free of charge with the staff the driving instruction division volunteering their time and Blackwater Worldwide providing the equipment. The average American Road is a long way from the mean streets of Baghdad. But for a teenage driver with no training it can be just as dangerous if the driving instructors at Blackwater have their way however that road will soon be a much safer place. Here's I'm going to cross me with the latest gear. A lot of people love owning the latest iPhone and iPods. But there's a drawback. You can't charge them if your car has an older iPod integration system. Well now the small adapter from SCO solves that problem. It converts from a 12 volt Firewire which Apple no longer supports to 5 volt U.S. B.
The passport features a female pass through connector it attaches to any in-car iPod integration system. It will charge the iPhone 3G the iPod Nano 4G and touch 2G with the Apple seal of approval. The passport maintains all functionality including audio video and data of these latest Apple models. The passport cost about $30. So there you have it. Gear that keeps all your devices charged and working loud and clear while on the road. This 2008 Nissan Rogue our drivers Choice Award winner for best small sport utility is fairing nicely in our long term fleet. Our staff loves its high seating position. Versatility and handling negatives include loud tires and not enough small item storage space. After eight months in nearly 17000 miles our all wheel drive roads 2.5 leader foreign CVT transmission combo is returning twenty four point four miles per gallon of regular.
That's a good result for any utility especially one as entertaining as the Nissan Rover. If you don't need all wheel drive our front drive only 2008 Kia Rondo is an interesting small crossover alternative. It's very roomy yet takes up no more pavement than a compact sedan. Great visibility is a plus with smart easy to use control placement. On the minus side are cheap feeling interior materials and the engine is a bit noisy and after 9 months in 12000 mostly commuter Miles. Toronto's 2.7 leader V-6 is managing an acceptable twenty two point four miles per gallon of regular gas with a low base price and high mileage power train warranty. They Cyrano is a small utility not to be ignored. We'll check up on the Honda Fit and BMW XXIX on the next motor week long term road test update. Time now for Jessica choccy and all the latest medical news.
